These hand painted sugar cookies are a great bake for any occasion, not to mention how relaxing painting each on can be. It is important when paining fondant that you use good quality, edible paints. In my opinion you just can’t beat the paints from Squires Kitchen. You can get your hands on them here and colour details are listed below!
Tip: This dough makes the perfect base for any iced cookie and is an American classic that stands up tall next to shortbread!
Cookie Ingredients –
- 470g plain flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 225g unsalted butter, room temperature
- 260g icing sugar
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 45ml milk
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder and salt.
- In the bowl of a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until it becomes a pale paste.
Tip: you don’t want it to be super fluffy, or the cookies will expand when baking.
- Add the vanilla and beat well. Add the egg and milk and beat until incorporated.
- Reduce the mixer speed to the lowest setting, and gradually add the flour mixture, beating until just a dough forms.
- Wrap the ball of dough in Clingfilm and press it firmly into a disc.
- Refrigerate for 1 hour.
- Unwrap the chilled dough and put it on a large piece of parchment.
- Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
- Preheat the oven to 180°c and line a baking tray with parchment.
- Remove the dough from the refrigerator and cut into shapes.
- Bake the cookies just until edges are crisp and very light golden color, 12-15 minutes.
Remaining Ingredients –
- 400g Ready to roll fondant
- Icing sugar for rolling
- A little jam.
- Squires Kitchen edible paints – I used Juniper, Cherry blossom and Apple.
- Edible glitter dust
- 24-Karat gold flakes (optional)
- Kneed the fondant until soft enough to work with.
- Dust your surface with icing sugar and roll the fondant to around 1/8inch thick.
Tip: do this a little at a time so you don’t use up all your room rolling the fondant!
- Use the same cutter your used for the biscuit to cut out a disk of fondant.
- Water your jam down a little so it can be spread on the cookie to help the fondant disk stick.
- Now to paint! In ramekins water down a few drops of each paint with a tiiiiiiiiny drop of vodka, this will help with your watercolor effect!
- Using sponges dab your colour onto the biscuits to get your desired effect.
- Sprinkle the cookies with a little edible glitter to finish, you can even add flakes of edible gold!
