You can’t get much more quintessentially British than afternoon tea but, as much as I love it (and I really do!), on occasion I crave something a little different from dainty cakes and finger sandwiches. Well we are now in a time where a new spate of teas-with-an-international-twist have landed so you can indulge in something a little more exotic whenever you like.
On Saturday I had the pleasure of tucking into one of London’s more unique afternoon teas at The Le Chinois restaurant in the Millennium Hotel Knightsbridge. When I was invited to this Dim Sum themed tea I couldn’t say no! Dim Sum is a crowd pleaser, most people love a bit of Chinese because it’s just SO tasty and this didn’t disappoint…
When I arrived at 12 for my booking the restaurant was pretty empty, but this didn’t mean the atmosphere wasn’t there and it soon began to fill up. From the word go the staff were faultless! Attentive, polite and my teacup, water glass and campaign flute were never left empty.
I had already looked at the menu (of course, doesn’t every foodie?!) so I knew what to expect of the food. What I hadn’t prepared for was the taste! My favourite by far was the crispy chicken strips but I thought the whole stand was well balanced and bursting with Chinese flavours. I also loved the authentic bamboo steamer that the Pork buns were served in, and thought this was a lovely touch.
There were plenty of different types of tea to pick from, something I think is essential for any afternoon tea. I mean you can have afternoon tea without the tea! I went for jasmine to stick to the Chinese theme and I have to say it went really well with the rest of the flavours despite being different to my usual choice of brew
As far as value for money, and an overall experience I would without a doubt recommend this Dim Sum afternoon tea to anyone who wants something a little different. At just £25 this is a complete no brainer and you won’t leave disappointed. As an afternoon tea lover with an extreme sweet tooth I cant say it trumps a traditional spread however It was by far a selection I would be happy to eat again and thanks to the attentive staff and chilled out atmosphere I would definitely visit again, perhaps this time to try their original Afternoon tea!
