From the humble Jersey Royal Potato to superior quality milk, Jersey is famous for its abundance of fresh, high quality seasonal produce and for being home to a variety of skilled craftsmen and artists who create a range of excellent product. So when I was invited to a dinner hosted my Jimmy Doherty to celebrate the champagne of potatoes, the Jersey Royal, and other Jersey produce I just couldn’t say no!
On arrival at Food 52 I was greeted by Jimmy and the Jersey Royal team with warm arms and a Jersey Gin and tonic. Not only is Jersey Gin made from JR Potatoes but this G&T was garnished with a mini JR too! How Quirky!
We all mingled for a while, snacking on miniature Jersey Royals and dips; Chimichuri, pesto and soured cream. Jimmy shared his passion for good produce, and his love for the Jersey Royal potato and the people behind it, it was so lovely to see someone talking so passionately about something often forgotten about. After a while, we headed downstairs for in Jimmy’s words, “a potato orgy!”
“When people get excited about something they start to look at the environment differently” – Jimmy Doherty
Needless to say, the food was amazing, but more than anything I enjoyed learning the story of each ingredient and it’s producer. Hearing about the passionate people behind such great food made it taste even better.
I left the dinner having eaten more than my fair share of potatoes, but just wanting to know more. I’m now fascinated by Jersey and can’t wait to explore and share with you some of it’s other culinary wonders!
A huge thank you to Jersey Royals and Jimmy for the invite and for teaching me so much about a place I knew little about.
You can learn more about the great food Jersey has to offer here, and stay tuned for some great recipes using Jersey ingredients coming very soon!
